Born and raised in Hokkaido, Japan, she has been trained to master the basics of calligraphy by learning under the Master Zuiho Sato since at the age of 6. “In the calligraphy world, there’s a ranking system, and you go through a total of 14 levels throughout the year to see how far you can rise,” she explained in an interview with 99u. “If you achieve the highest rank six years in a row, you will be become a master student or student master.” View this post on Instagram The sound of the raindrops, the smell or air, and its warmth – spring rain evokes emotions that inspire our creative imagination. . I’m excited to announce my collaboration with Canada Goose for their Spring/Summer campaign of Nomad Capsule Collection, inspired by the spring, rain, and the island nation of Japan whose culture is intertwined with seasons. . ELEMENTAL SHELTER, a film and photography to celebrate the brand’s Nomad collection in the spring rain, feature the sound artist and product designer Kouichi Okamoto and myself, shot in the wilderness of Wakayama prefecture and urban environment of Tokyo. Okamoto composed a soundtrack with his field recordings from the mystic forests of Wakayama. I would look at my master’s work and try to write it exactly the same, following his brushstroke. My work wouldn’t come out the same, so I’d get frustrated. However, I’m really persistent, so I would strain my back over a sheet of paper, practicing for hours until I could write something nearly identical to my master. I found this process very meditative. To this day, I love the smell of the sumi ink.” Since moving to the US in 2004, she has performed and exhibited her works in many galleries, museums, universities, and festivals around the States and abroad. Her work explores this juxtaposition between her identities: on the one hand, relying on her background in the traditional Eastern classics and on the other, relating to her contemporary artistic expressions. Her aim? To transform the two-dimensional art of Japanese Calligraphy into the art of physical expression through performances. Take a look for yourself:. To express “rain”, I become one with the rain – through feeling the rain, smelling the rain, and truly seeing the rain with all of my senses. When I have the rain within me, I pick up the brush. . Under the cold rain shower, it was immensely tranquil. While fingers and toes were freezing, I could feel the gentle warmth inside of me. And that was when I felt the senses most sharpened, in silence. . Kakizome (書き初め) is the term for the first calligraphy writing of the new year, traditionally performed on the second day of January. Traditionally, water (若水 “wakamizu”) used to make the Sumi ink for Kakizome must be the one taken from the well on the New Year’s day, which is believed to be pure and holy. Wishing to bring the good luck for the year, we write Kakizome facing towards 恵方 (“ehou”), the fortunate direction of the year based on the local zodiac. . This event is also called 吉書 (“kissho” – first writing), 初硯 (“hatsu-suzuri” – first ink well) and 試筆 (“shi-hitsu” – first writing).
. People write auspicious kanji characters or a short poetry, such as haiku or tanka, or their favorite characters that symbolize one’s wishes for the New Year. . Have you decided your resolution for the next year? I’m still thinking of mine. Looking forward to have you join our Kakizome workshop on January 4th, and start the year together with a fresh mind! . Many of us search for purposes for our lives, trying to find the treasures somewhere far; but we already have treasures in our hands. You have the treasure within you. . For my calligraphy performance here in Lithuania, I’ve chosen to write「明珠在掌」(myo-ju-zai-sho), from the zen teaching, for the final piece of the three segments. The timing has aligned with the earthquake in my hometown in Hokkaido, Japan, which was biggest in history for us. It happened the late night before the first day of the show. I immediately called my family to make sure that they are safe. In the midst of this sudden terror from nature, I felt even more strongly about this word – the force of nature and vulnerability of humans living in its blessings – the life I have is so precious, breathing and existing in this miraculous way. We must cherish every moment of our lives. . I look at my hands, still with stains of Sumi ink within the wrinkles of my palm, and thinking; how fortunate I am to have these hands to make my poems come alive on paper, to reach out to you. Hernán, Remy, and I have been spending most of the day at home, and everything feels normal, but isn't. We're doing everyday things, but I'm second guessing them. Like — if we need to run to the store for something, I think, "Is it absolutely essential to go out?" Workouts are always done at home in front of the television because the gym is closed and it's cold outside. We're washing our hands until they're cracked and dry. And I can't help but worry about the older members of my family, some of whom have underlying health issues. ⠀ .⠀ I think we're all in that boat, and we're all in this together. The best we can do is, of course, try and take care of those in our communities who need us — and take care of our own physical and mental health. To me, a big part of that is taking time for creativity. If you find yourself with idle time and a racing mind, complete a tutorial. Work in your sketchbook. Fill out a calligraphy worksheet. The TPK blog is full of free project tutorials/printables to keep busy, and now through Thursday, digital products (like worksheets) are 25% off with the code KEEPINGBUSY. As you start to get the hang of how to use a dip pen, take on engaging projects.” According to Bugbee, as long as your practice is enjoyable, you’ll continue to hone your skills. Her blog is a great tool for aspiring calligraphers, but you can also enjoy Bugbee’s work without dipping your pen via Instagram: View this post on Instagram Just a bit of encouragement for you: when I started learning calligraphy, I didn't especially have a knack for it. The top two envelopes show my early (2012) attempts, when I was too terrified to use a dip pen! It was only after months of practice and more trial and error than I care to admit that I started to see results. The bottom envelopes are from 2014, and I only continued to improve from there. .⠀ My hope in providing calligraphy courses and worksheets is to empower other people to progress quicker than I did. I want you to feel comfortable moving on past faux calligraphy, and I want you to benefit from my mistakes (including using the wrong paper/ink combinations, gripping the pen wrong, the list goes on …)! When people talk to me about building their personal brands, they often want to start with logos and colour palettes, but that comes later. I always ask them first, WHY? Why do they want a brand? Why do they want to be seen, and what do they hope to gain from having a brand? ⁣ ⁣ Personal branding gets a pretty bad rap but I believe that a person’s ‘brand’ can really be distilled into “what matters to them.” That’s why I don’t feel ick about the idea of having a personal brand: to me, it’s just a public representation of what I stand for. So I ask my clients: “If I was to wave a magic wand that could take us five years into the future, in an ideal world, what would your creative/business life look like?”⁣ ⁣ And for me, this picture is IT, my imagined ideal future. Her posts are playful and inspiring without being too preachy. But she admits it took her much practice to get to where she is. “As a graphic designer, typography has been a passion of mine as long as I can remember,” she admitted. “I used to write, and rewrite my class notes until they were as close to perfect as possible. I learned so much about the art of type as a design student, and I interned at a letterpress studio to learn more about the origin of type. I wanted to learn more about hand lettering because I knew it would bring a unique and personalized touch to the work I was doing with my design clients.” Her curiosity about hand lettering would blossom into a full-time job a while later. “I took the class as a creative outlet,” she says. “While it related directly to the work I do daily, it was a step away from the computer, a new challenge. The first two pieces I created while binging Netflix, and it felt SO good to just draw! I didn't have to think about what to draw, what to create, I had the parameters right in front of me! The cherry on top? I didn't have a client breathing down my neck, just the support of other like-minded creatives, creating alongside me. If you've been on the fence about the builder, I hope this helps! As always, feel free to reach out with any questions! A post shared by Ilana Griffo (@ilanagriffo) on Jan 7, 2020 at 9:09am PST View this post on Instagram A few years ago, I tried reprogramming my brain from freelance work, to art licensing. It was really challenging, and I felt lost most of the time. Now, @katiemadethat and I have teamed up to help you build your portfolio without all that overwhelm. Plus, alongside some incredible artists!! ⠀ ⠀ The Art Licensing Portfolio Builder officially starts THIS WEEK. Katie and I both completed the challenge early as an example, and this is mine! I LOVED this challenge, honestly I'm excited for the whole year of challenges. It's 100 prompts that we've crafted to help you make a SELLABLE body of work. I'd love to see this on a greeting card for Valentine's day or an anniversary. I loved trying something a bit outside my comfort zone (thanks to Katie for the inspiration from this week's prompt – swipe to see the prompt), and i'm SO excited to see what our students come up with! #ALPortfolioBuilder A post shared by Ilana Griffo (@ilanagriffo) on Jan 1, 2020 at 5:32pm PST View this post on Instagram This hit me like a ton of bricks. When I heard this from @tisahleigh in her yoga class, I felt so seen. I keep catching myself in a cycle (a common one for freelancers, entrepreneurs, side hustlers, & go getters) where I think I'm supposed to do something, but it's not at all what I need, and I get stuck. So here's my reminder to you, and to myself:⠀ ⠀ You don't have to do what's expected.⠀ You don't have to do what everyone else is doing.⠀ You don't have to do what doesn't feel right.⠀ ⠀ You DO have to listen to your gut, and do what's right for you. Screw the rest!
I’m writing, I’m painting, I’m in nature, and everything feels… calm. ⁣ ⁣ How about you? How would you answer that question? ⁣ ⁣ #onequietcup #creativelife #buildabrandyoulove #prettycreativestyle #natureonthepage #slowfloralstyle #signaturescent #outdoorsandhappy #mybeautifulsimplicity #thewonderinglight #botanicaldaydreams A post shared by Naomi Bulger (@naomibulger) on Jan 29, 2020 at 4:57pm PST View this post on Instagram Getting back to where it all began. It’s spring! Sunny days and chilly nights and gentle rain and finally – FINALLY – my poor, neglect-and-summer devastated garden is coming back to life. New growth is shooting up everywhere, buds are unfurling, birds are singing and the bees are coming back. It is truly, wonderfully glorious, and I am going to write a dozen letters to people I love, extolling the virtues of spring in the garden. This may well bore them to tears but, no matter, hopefully they will feel joy in knowing I am thinking of them and writing to them. ⁣ ⁣ Ooh I’ve just had a thought! (I mean I LITERALLY thought of this just now, as I was writing this caption): do you want to write with me? Let’s all write and send 12 joyful letters, celebrating the season, whatever the season is for you right now. We can hashtag #12joyfulletters and share our outgoing mail with one another. Illustrator, letterer, and author Ilana Griffo knows best. Based in Upstate New York, her stylized messages are meant to get you going. “I love that each person’s lettering style is a reflection of themselves,” remarked Griffo in an interview with Hand Lettering for Beginners. “That’s what makes it so unique – your personal touch.” View this post on Instagram Legit COMING OFF A HIGH RIGHT NOW. @katiemadethat and I just hopped off our first live webinar and it was A BLAST. However the first ten minutes were full of my technical difficulties and honestly I was worried I was going to fart on camera… but we DID IT! Here's my major takeaway: share your mistakes, celebrate your highs, connect with the community, quadruple check your work, turn competitors into friends, and LOVE what you make. So thankful for this community of people who make me feel heard, and teach me so much in return. Been running a million miles a minute, gonna go sleep for three seconds! A post shared by Ilana Griffo (@ilanagriffo) on Dec 3, 2019 at 7:12pm PST If lettering is all about that personal touch, Griffo’s got it in spades. I was excited to have some direction, and someone to inspire and motivate me.” Now she motivates others through her writing. It seems we’ve come full circle! View this post on Instagram I've learned a lot of things throughout my journey, but the missing piece, the part that ties it all together, that might be the most important. A post shared by Ilana Griffo (@ilanagriffo) on Dec 17, 2019 at 4:01am PST View this post on Instagram Does the thought of building a WHOLE NEW portfolio sound exciting, but MOSTLY overwhelming? It felt pretty overwhelming to me, and still does. Dedicating "free time" to work can be draining, but it can also be EXHILARATING!
